“Bazball won’t work” – Harbhajan Singh gives warning to England ahead of 5-match Test series against India.
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has issued a warning to the England cricket team as they gear up for a challenging five-match Test series in India. The ex-cricketer, now a commentator, has expressed skepticism about England’s Bazball approach being effective in India, emphasizing the spin-friendly conditions that dominate the subcontinent. Harbhajan Singh, a legendary off-spinner himself, believes that England’s spinners could play a crucial role in the series if they can exploit the spin-friendly surfaces.
The warning is particularly relevant as England seems to have limited experience in their spin department, with Jack Leach being the sole experienced spinner among the quartet. Leach, a left-arm spinner, showcased his prowess by claiming 18 wickets during the four-match Test series in India in 2020-21. However, the other spinners in the squad have varying degrees of experience.
Rehan Ahmed, having played only one Test in Pakistan, managed to secure seven wickets in that appearance. On the other hand, Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir are yet to make their Test debuts, adding an element of unpredictability to England’s spin options. The effectiveness of these spinners will be crucial for England’s chances in the series.
Harbhajan Singh said “Bazball won’t work. The conditions are going to be pretty difficult for England. Pitches will turn from the first day, and if you have an accurate spinner, he will take wickets. On both sides, actually. Toss becomes pretty important on such wickets. I don’t think England have a chance unless there isn’t much to offer for spinners.”
