(Watch) Emotional Brian Lara starts crying as West Indies registers a historic win over Australia after 27 years.

Following West Indies’ remarkable victory over Australia by 8 runs in the second and final Test, former player Adam Gilchrist shared an emotional moment with Brian Lara, who was moved to tears by the historic win. This triumph marked West Indies’ first victory over Australia in 27 years. Defending a target of 215 runs, the visitors successfully restricted the Pat Cummins-led team to 207 runs in the fourth innings.

In the dressing room, Gilchrist, Lara, and Ian Smith witnessed the climax of the match as Shamar Joseph claimed the final Australian wicket, sealing the famous win over the world champions.

Ian Smith expressed his astonishment at West Indies’ achievement, stating, “West Indies have created the most amazing thing over here at the Gabba. This is amazing.” Meanwhile, Brian Lara, the former West Indies superstar, was overwhelmed with emotion, crying with tears in his eyes remarking, “Unbelievable. 27 years to beat Australia in Australia. Young, inexperienced and written off. This West Indies team can stand tall today. Today is a big day. Congratulations.”

Despite suffering what appeared to be a serious toe injury from a delivery by Mitchell Starc in the final ball of West Indies’ second innings, Shamar Joseph returned with a stunning display of fast bowling to dismantle the Australian batting lineup. Joseph claimed 7 wickets for 68 runs off 11.5 overs, reaching speeds of close to 150 kph (93 mph) and wreaking havoc on the Australian middle order.

Joseph’s spell included crucial dismissals, such as breaking the partnership between Cameron Green (42) and Travis Head (0), and later claiming the wickets of Mitch Marsh (10), Alex Carey (2), Mitchell Starc (21), Pat Cummins (2), Nathan Lyon (0), and Josh Hazlewood (0).

Earlier in the match, West Indies made significant breakthroughs on Day 3, with Australia ending the day at 60-2, still requiring 156 runs for victory. Despite West Indies’ bowlers bowling out Australia for 193 in the last session, Hazlewood and Lyon impressed with figures of 3-23 and 3-42 respectively, while Starc and Green picked up one wicket each.
