Australia and New Zealand continued their ongoing multi-format series with the first of two Tests at the Basin Reserve in Wellington from Thursday, February 29. Australia batted first, posting a total of 383 runs in the first innings.
During the match, Kane Williamson faced a controversial dismissal, running himself out for a duck after colliding with batting partner Will Young on Day 2. Facing Mitchell Starc in the fifth over, Williamson fended off a delivery towards mid-off, resulting in a mix-up that led to his dismissal.

Despite the setback, the Australian side performed well in the early stages of the Test. Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja contributed with scores of 31 and 33 runs, respectively. However, it was Cameron Green’s unbeaten knock of 174 runs in 275 deliveries that propelled Australia forward. Mitchell Marsh also chipped in with 40 runs.
New Zealand’s Matt Henry was the highest wicket-taker in the first innings with five wickets, supported by William O’Rourke and Scott Kuggeleijn with two wickets each, and Rachin Ravindra with one.
As the first innings progressed, New Zealand aimed to minimize their trail before their second innings.
