“It was Tendulkar and Laxman and Dravid, and it was kind of like, ‘How am I here?'” – Kane Williamson recalls journey to 100th Test

In a reflection on his illustrious career, star New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson reminisced about his Test debut, which took place in Ahmedabad against India in 2010. Williamson, now 33 years old, vividly recalled the sense of awe he felt being on the same field as cricketing legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and VVS Laxman.

Despite the match ending in a draw, Williamson left a lasting impression by scoring a remarkable 131 runs in his maiden innings, showcasing his exceptional skill against spin bowling right from the start.

Fast forward to his upcoming 100th Test match, Williamson’s journey has been marked by consistent excellence, recently achieving the feat of becoming the fastest

Kane Williamson on his 100th Test match said “I remember walking out and looking around the field and seeing all my heroes. I used to love playing backyard cricket as a youngster, and all those guys were in that team that I would try and select. It was Tendulkar and Laxman and Dravid, and it was kind of like, ‘How am I here? I’d better start watching the ball and try and compete.”

“It was quite surreal. I remember being quite eager to try and get into the opposition’s dressing room and chat to some of those guys if I could. Then a few grey hairs later and [after] a number of different experiences over that time, there’s not been many days – probably any – where I haven’t tried to improve and get better as a player,” he added

With an impressive tally of 8,675 runs, Williamson stands as New Zealand’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket, boasting an outstanding average of over 55.
