‘Sehwag can be India’s chairman of selectors but wont due to less ‘pay package’ reveal a BCCI official.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently functioning with interim chief selector Shiv Sunder Das, following the removal of Chetan Sharma due to a sting operation that revealed him discussing confidential information regarding Team India players and the selection process. This incident led to his dismissal from the position.
In recent years, prominent figures have refrained from applying for the national selector’s job, and the lack of stature among those taking up the role has contributed to them not being “taken seriously,” according to PTI reports.
The chairman of the senior selection panel receives an annual salary of ₹1 crore, while the other four members are paid ₹90 lakh per year. The last time the selection panel was led by renowned former cricketers was during the tenures of former captains Dilip Vengsarkar (2006-2008) and Krishnamachari Srikkanth (2008-2012).
The relatively lower compensation for the chief selector role, in comparison to the earnings of former cricketers from broadcasting and endorsement commitments, as well as their involvement with cricket academies, makes it less appealing. PTI reports indicate that this factor has deterred notable figures such as Virender Sehwag from considering the job.
A BCCI source told PTI “During CoA’s time, Viru (Sehwag) was asked to apply for head coach’s job and then it went to Anil Kumble. It is unlikely he will apply himself and also the pay package isn’t something that will be financially viable for someone of his stature,”.
