“Rinku Singh could have been a better choice”: Aakash Chopra for potential lower-middle-order batter for WI T20I series.
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that Rinku Singh could have been a more suitable choice than Tilak Varma as a lower-middle-order batsman for India’s T20I team. The national selectors recently announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies, scheduled to commence on Wednesday, July 5. Despite Rinku Singh’s impressive performances as a finisher in the IPL 2023, he was surprisingly not included in the squad, despite being considered as a strong contender for his maiden national call-up.
Expressing his views in a video posted on his YouTube channel, Chopra expressed his belief that Rinku Singh should have been preferred over Tilak Varma, unless the latter is being considered as a potential No. 3 batsman for the team.
Aakash Chopra on his YT channel said “In the middle order – Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. I don’t think the team is thinking of playing Tilak Varma at No. 3. If they were searching for a player to bat after Hardik Pandya, then Rinku Singh could have been a better choice unless Tilak Varma will play at No. 3.”
Chopra emphasized that Tilak Verma wont be able to play at no.3 saying “You might want to play Tilak Varma down the order because whether it is Ishan Kishan or Sanju Samson, the two wicketkeepers you have picked, their best place for batting is in the top three.”
