Chris Woakes and Mark Wood grasp the victory to keep Ashes alive, England defeats Australia by 3 Wickets.
In the 3rd Ashes Test match at Headingley in Leeds, England secured their first victory of the ongoing Ashes series on Day 4. The three-wicket win allowed England to make a comeback in the series, with the Ashes score line now standing at 2-1.
On Day 4, England began their innings at 27/0 after a rain-affected Day 3. However, the determined Australian bowling attack came out firing, making early breakthroughs. Speedster Mitchell Starc played a crucial role, dismissing Ben Duckett and Moeen Ali for 23 and 5 runs, respectively. Mitchell Marsh joined the party, swiftly removing Zak Crawley for 44 runs off 55 balls, reducing England to 93/3.
Joe Root and Harry Brook then steadied the innings with a 38-run partnership, bringing England back on track. However, Australian captain Pat Cummins made a vital breakthrough by dismissing Root, giving Australia a glimmer of hope as England reached 153/4 at lunch.
Brook held firm at the crease, keeping the scoreboard ticking. England captain Ben Stokes started his innings aggressively but was dismissed for 13 off 15 balls by Starc.
Jonny Bairstow’s brief stay at the crease for five runs added to England’s woes. It was up to Brook to rise to the occasion, and he did so by crafting a well-constructed half-century off 67 balls, including six boundaries.
Chris Woakes provided valuable support to Brook, scoring crucial boundaries to keep England in the contest. The pair forged a remarkable 59-run partnership that brought England close to victory. However, Starc once again made an impact by dismissing Brook for 75 off 93 balls, completing his five-wicket haul in the match.
Despite Starc’s impressive fightback, Woakes (32* off 47 balls) and Mark Wood (16* off 8 balls) showcased their power-hitting skills to guide England to a thrilling victory. Their contributions ensured that England reached the finish line and secured their first win of the series.
