‘I was his captain that gave him his first Test cap’, Michael Vaughan remembers the journey of Stuart Board from debut to 600 wickets.
Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has heaped praise on Stuart Broad for reaching the remarkable milestone of 600 Test wickets during the fourth Ashes Test. Vaughan fondly remembered the time when he handed Broad his Test cap, as he was the captain during Broad’s debut Test against Sri Lanka in December 2007.
In the ongoing Ashes series in 2023, the 37-year-old Broad has been outstanding and currently leads the wicket-takers chart with an impressive tally of 18 dismissals. On the first day of the fourth Test, Broad showcased his skill once again by taking two wickets in the 14 overs he bowled. His 600th Test wicket was none other than Australian batsman Travis Head.
Throughout his illustrious career, the right-arm pacer has achieved numerous milestones, including 20 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket hauls in 165 Test matches. Broad’s remarkable achievement places him among an elite group of bowlers who have surpassed the milestone of 600 Test wickets. This exclusive list includes legendary names like Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708), James Anderson (688), and Anil Kumble (619).
Michael Vaughan said “What an effort from Broad, I was his captain that gave him his first Test cap in Sri Lanka and now 16 years later he’s got to 600.”“Even with all the wickets he has taken, he was working on a new delivery ahead of the season, the out-swinger. He is always trying to get better. That is why he is so high on that wicket-takers list. A constant search for improvement.”
