“He’ll get one more opportunity and that’s prbably it”: Wasim Jaffer over Suryakumar Yadav’s ODI run.

In the second ODI of the three-match series against West Indies in Barbados on Saturday, Suryakumar Yadav faced disappointment as he was dismissed for 24 runs. This followed his previous performance in the opening ODI at the same venue, where he was out for 19 runs. Unfortunately, Suryakumar’s struggle in the ODI format continues, as he has now gone 17 innings without scoring a half-century.

Former cricketer and renowned coach, Wasim Jaffer, shared his insights on Suryakumar’s ODI struggles, expressing concern over the limited time available for the batter to prove himself.

Wasim Jaffer said “I think he’ll get one more opportunity in the third ODI and that’s probably it. Then KL [Rahul] and Shreyas Iyer might come in and he’ll find it difficult to get into the side. The way he bats, he takes very high-risk options. He looks to hit boundaries; sometimes that’s what makes his lose his wicket.”

While acknowledging that Suryakumar’s aggressive style can be thrilling to watch when it works, Jaffer pointed out the need for the Mumbai batsman to cultivate patience while batting in one-day matches, saying “In the 50-over format, you need to take the game deep. That’s what Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and even Shikhar Dhawan did. It’s his nature to take risky options. He needs to change that in this format. He can’t keep looking to hit boundaries every second-third ball. We see him do that time and again – getting a start and throwing his wicket away.”

Suryakumar Yadav has represented India in 25 ODIs, but his performances have been underwhelming, with a disappointing average of 23.80 and a total of 476 runs.
