“We didn’t expect 6, 6 to start his international career”: Robin Uthappa in awe of Tilak Varma after his impactful T20I debut.

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa heaped praise on Tilak Varma following the latter’s impressive international debut in the first T20I against West Indies. The match took place at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad on Thursday. Uthappa commended Varma, considering him a highly intelligent cricketer with a strong mental attitude.

India faced a defeat against West Indies by a narrow margin of four runs in the opening T20I of the five-match series. While chasing a target of 150, India’s batting struggled, and they managed to reach only 145/9. Despite the team’s overall performance, Tilak Varma’s debut was a standout.

Varma showcased his potential by making an immediate impact on the game. He took a remarkable running catch in the outfield to dismiss Johnson Charles, displaying his fielding prowess. However, it was with the bat that Varma truly shone, emerging as India’s top scorer in the chase. He scored an impressive 39 runs off just 22 balls.

In a stunning display of power hitting, Varma smashed the second and third deliveries he faced from Alzarri Joseph for sixes, making a stylish entry into international cricket.

Robin Uthappa said “We didn’t expect 6, 6 to start his international career. He made it look easy. I mean, these are some sublime shots, just the sound of the bat, certainly great shots and speak volumes about how confident he’s feeling at the moment. And you know, I think he’s got a very firm head on his shoulders. I think he’s a very intelligent cricketer.”
