“Can’t deliver under pressure” Pakistan’s Salman Butt indirectly hits out at Rohit Sharma.

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan recently had the opportunity to showcase his talent in Test cricket during the two-match series against West Indies. The left-handed batsman made an impressive start to his Test career, scoring a half-century in the second match. The 25-year-old has been enjoying a successful phase in his career, particularly highlighted by his remarkable achievement of scoring the fastest double hundred in ODI cricket against Bangladesh in Chattogram, which concluded his 2022 on a high note.

Despite his record-breaking innings, Ishan Kishan faced a setback when he was dropped from the team for the subsequent ODI against Sri Lanka on January 10, 2023. He was replaced by Shubman Gill. Nevertheless, Kishan made a strong comeback in the recent ODI series against West Indies, opening the innings and impressively scoring three half-centuries. His performances earned him the Player of the Series award.

However, Kishan’s place in the team is once again under scrutiny as captain Rohit Sharma is set to return and take the opening spot alongside Shubman Gill in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023.

Former Pakistani cricketer Salman Butt recently commented on Ishan Kishan’s treatment by the Indian team management, expressing concerns about its impact on Kishan’s confidence. Butt believes that regardless of his performances, Kishan may feel like a second option in the team, which could be detrimental to his self-assurance.

Salman Butt said “I absolutely agree (that India’s experiment with Ishan was confusing). One guy being dropped after scoring 200… what’s the point? Either they accept the fact that he is second option, even if he scores 1000 runs in a single innings. That never gives you the feeling of being the best, that never gives you the feeling that you will be rewarded for your performances. Currently, the feeling is no matter what you do, you will be the second option.”

Continuing his remarks, Salman Butt indirectly criticized Rohit Sharma, suggesting that certain players have enjoyed long careers but falter when faced with pressure situations.

Salman Butt said “He is not a bench strength level anymore. He’s more than that. Secondly, I accept that Rohit is a big player, but some players are there who have been around for a long time but when pressure gets to them, they can’t deliver. Especially at the knock-out stages, this is something that has to be worked on.”
