Mumbai Indians appoints Lasith Malinga back as fast bowling coach for IPL.

Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga is set to rejoin the Mumbai Indians, a five-time IPL champion team, as their fast bowling coach for the upcoming 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Malinga will be taking over the role from former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond, who has been associated with the Mumbai Indians for a considerable period.

Malinga had most recently been a part of the Rajasthan Royals team, having joined them during the 15th edition of the tournament. Notably, he had previously served as a mentor for the Mumbai Indians in 2018 but made a return to active play a year later, ultimately retiring from the sport in 2021.

The situation regarding Bond’s future as the head coach for MI Emirates in the ILT20 remains uncertain. Moreover, Malinga’s return to the Mumbai Indians’ coaching setup could have a significant impact on the team’s performance. In the IPL 2022, under Malinga’s guidance, the Rajasthan Royals showed notable improvement and reached the tournament’s final. It will be intriguing to observe if Malinga can replicate a similar positive influence on the Mumbai Indians’ performance.
