“These next few months are critical to cementing his legacy as a leader” – Ian Bishop on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy future in Asia Cup and World Cup.

Former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop expressed his views on the crucial months ahead, indicating that the forthcoming period will play a defining role in shaping the legacy of India’s captain, Rohit Sharma. Notably, significant tournaments such as the Asia Cup and the ICC ODI World Cup are lined up in succession.

After taking over the captaincy from Virat Kohli in all formats last year, Rohit Sharma has been at the helm. He notably guided India to victory in the 2018 Asia Cup, which was the last edition of the continental tournament played in the 50-over format.

Ian Bishop, during an interview with RevSportz, elaborated on how Rohit Sharma’s captaincy presents a significant opportunity for India to put an end to their title drought in ICC events.

Bishop said “These next few months are critical to cementing his legacy as a leader if he can take some of that silverware back home.”

“As far as leadership role is concerned, he is obviously aware that India with all its resources – playing and economic – the fulfillment of an ICC tournament since that Champions Trophy in England is something they definitely want.”

Rohit Sharma faced disappointment when he was excluded from India’s victorious 2011 World Cup squad. However, his cricketing journey took a significant turn when he was elevated to the role of the team’s opening batter in 2013.

Hailing from Mumbai, Rohit’s performance underwent remarkable improvement during this period. He actively participated in both the 2015 and 2019 World Cup tournaments. Notably, he emerged as the leading run-scorer in the latter edition, amassing a staggering 648 runs across nine innings. This remarkable feat included an impressive tally of five centuries, on this Bishop remarked

“Rohit has been an outstanding batter and particularly if you talk about his record in the 50-over format. Has been a general of that format. Now he is making a really good fist of his Test batting.”
