“It is not under my control” – Marnus Labuschagne on his chances for playing in 2023 World Cup after his brilliant knock against South Africa.
Australian cricketer Marnus Labuschagne, a prominent figure in the cricketing world, recently voiced his perspective on the upcoming World Cup 2023 selection process. In a humble and pragmatic manner, Labuschagne acknowledged that the fate of his selection lies beyond his control, and he is prepared to embrace whatever outcome awaits him.
Labuschagne’s latest standout performance occurred during the second One Day International (ODI) against South Africa in Bloemfontein on September 9. The 29-year-old right-handed batter demonstrated his prowess by scoring an impressive 124 runs off just 99 deliveries. This outstanding performance played a pivotal role in Australia’s commanding total of 392-6 within their allotted 50 overs. Notably, Labuschagne achieved his second ODI century in just 80 balls, establishing a formidable 151-run partnership with David Warner. This exceptional partnership contributed significantly to Australia’s 2-0 lead in the ongoing five-game series.
In a candid moment during the post-match presentation, Labuschagne expressed some regret, feeling that he might have let a few additional runs slip through his grasp.
Labuschagne said “It’s always nice, nice to score some runs and obviously to get this win. Yeah, I still think that I left a few runs there. I could have really opened up and get some more 30. But you have to be contented. Not just me, the boys out there.”
He furthermore added “The boys got a lightning start and even when we lost wickets, we managed to get up. It is not under my control [on World Cup non-selection]. I was having a word with Shamsi. My thing is to play my cricket. If I get to go home, I get to see my daughter, if I go to the World Cup, I get to play the World Cup.”
It’s worth noting that Labuschagne’s journey in the first ODI saw him stepping in as a concussion substitute for Cameron Green. In a challenging situation where Australia was pursuing a target of 223 runs and struggling at 113-7, Labuschagne’s resilience and skill came to the fore. He partnered with Ashton Agar to guide Australia to a remarkable three-wicket victory, stitching together an unbroken 112-run partnership that showcased his remarkable ability to perform under pressure.
