“Wanted to keep bowling him, but got message from our trainer that we need to stop him now”,Rohit Sharma on Mohammed Siraj’s magical bowling spell against Sri Lanka.
In a recent statement, Team India captain Rohit Sharma disclosed his desire to have pacer Mohammed Siraj continue bowling despite the latter delivering seven consecutive overs. Rohit further revealed that he received advice from the team trainer cautioning against such a decision, even though Siraj was enthusiastic about persisting with his spell.
Mohammed Siraj displayed an outstanding performance by claiming remarkable figures of 6/21 in just seven overs during the Asia Cup 2023 final. This remarkable performance contributed to Sri Lanka’s swift dismissal for a mere 50 runs in 15.2 overs. This happened after Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, September 17.
Following India’s resounding 10-wicket victory in the final, Rohit Sharma took the opportunity to share his perspective on Siraj’s exceptional spell and elucidated why the talented pacer was not allowed to bowl beyond seven overs.
Rohit Sharma said “We all complimented him and were behind him when he was bowling that spell. He bowled seven overs which is a lot. I wanted to keep bowling him, but I got a message from our trainer that we need to stop him now. He was also quite desperate to bowl. That’s the nature of any bowler or any batter when they see the opportunity, they want to pounce on it.”
The 36-year-old emphasized the importance of not getting carried away by the immediate success, emphasizing the significance of considering the broader team strategy, saying:
“But that’s where my job comes in and I want to make sure everything stays a little calm and you don’t over exaggerate a little too much. That’s the call. I remember against Sri Lanka in Trivandrum he was in a similar situation, he bowled eight-nine overs on a trot, he was on four wickets. But seven overs is good enough.”
