“A game or two is not going to define Shreyas Iyer” – Abhishek Nayar on Iyer’s concerning form since he’s return.
Abhishek Nayar has expressed his support for Shreyas Iyer’s return to form in ODI cricket, emphasizing that a couple of recent setbacks should not define the talented batter. Nayar believes that Shreyas merely needs to secure one impressive innings to regain his confidence.
Shreyas Iyer recently made a comeback to international cricket during the Asia Cup after recovering from a back injury. However, his tournament journey was marred by back spasms, causing him to miss the Super 4 round and the final.
In addition to concerns about his fitness, questions have arisen about Shreyas’ batting form. During the Asia Cup group match against Pakistan, the 28-year-old was dismissed for just 14 runs. More recently, in Mohali against Australia, he was run out for a mere 3 runs off 8 balls due to a mix-up with Shubman Gill.
Addressing Shreyas’ recent dismissals on Jio Cinema, Abhishek Nayar firmly stood behind the batter, believing in his ability to make a strong comeback.
Nayar said “He’s a professional cricketer and being part of the IPL setup for a long time and this Indian team for a couple of years now, he understands that you made a mistake and the communication wasn’t great. It maybe wasn’t the right time to pick that single. India were in a comfortable position. But you expect Shreyas Iyer to come back from this.”
Nayar also highlighted that Shreyas will not face undue pressure, as he enjoys the support of the Indian team and has a proven track record in the one-day format, saying
“He has come back before as well and I am sure he is going to be in a relaxed space because of the environment in this Indian team is where they are backing players. He knows he has done well over a period of time. A game or two is not going to define Shreyas Iyer. It’s just about him finding that one inning. Iyer has done it for India in this format.”
