“England because of the kind of talent that they have” – Sunil Gavaskar tells his favorites for World Cup 2023

Indian cricket legend and former captain, Sunil Gavaskar, has expressed his belief that the defending champions, England, are the front-runners for the upcoming World Cup in India, set to commence on October 5th.

Under the leadership of Jos Buttler, the English cricket team has been in remarkable form, evident from their convincing victories in recent series. They secured a resounding 3-1 victory against New Zealand in the home ODI series and followed it with a 1-0 win against Ireland, showcasing their prowess on both domestic and international fronts.

This prediction by Gavaskar comes after England’s disappointing campaign in the 2015 World Cup, where they were prematurely eliminated in the quarter-finals by Bangladesh. Following that setback, England underwent a significant transformation under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan. Their strategy was revamped, bolstered by the inclusion of numerous all-rounders, thus fortifying their batting lineup. This change in approach allowed their batters to launch relentless attacks right from the first ball.

During an interview with Star Sports on the program ‘Mission World Cup,’ Sunil Gavaskar was posed with the pivotal question of selecting his favorite contender for the 2023 World Cup. In response, Gavaskar cast his vote in favor of the English team

Sunil Gavaskar said “The defending champions, England because of the kind of talent that they have at, at the top of the order, the batting order, they’ve got two or three world-class all -rounders who can change the game with both bat and ball. They’ve also got a very good bowling line-up, experienced bowling line-up, so at the moment in my book certainly.”
