“I did go and apologize immediately and after the game” – Heinrich Klaasen opens up on being aggressive with Mark Wood during his century celebration.

South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen expressed his regret for his celebration during and after the match against England in the 2023 World Cup clash held in Mumbai on October 21. Klaasen achieved a remarkable milestone by scoring his fourth ODI century, and it was his maiden World Cup century, which he reached in style.

Klaasen’s century came off just 61 balls, showcasing his incredible skill and composure. In the process, he smacked a magnificent straight six and followed it up with a boundary in the short fine-leg region off Mark Wood, the English bowler. However, the exuberance of the moment got the better of Klaasen, as he punched the air and swung his bat in celebration right in front of Mark Wood.

Reflecting on his actions after the game, Heinrich Klaasen expressed remorse for his behavior. He acknowledged that his actions were unsportsmanlike and immediately apologized to Mark Wood, both during the match and later on.

Henrich Klassen said “I did go and apologise [to Wood] immediately and after the game,” Klaasen said. “But he did hit me twice on the foot, which is hurting quite a bit. I’m sorry for him and the English boys but it’s pure emotion that came out and sometimes it’s difficult to control. I spoke to him after the game and hopefully everything is sorted.”

In the match, Klaasen’s brilliant century was a significant highlight, and it contributed to South Africa’s commanding performance. The South African team batted for the full 50 overs, and Mark Wood, the English bowler, had a tough outing, conceding 76 runs in his seven overs without managing to take a wicket.

In response, the England team struggled and was bowled out for a mere 170 runs, marking their worst defeat in terms of margin, with a loss by 229 runs. It was a significant victory for South Africa, and Klaasen’s century was a key factor in their triumph.
