“I have never understood why the finisher’s tag is given only to Nos. 5 to 7” – Gautam Gambhir claims that there cant’ be a better finisher than Virat Kohli.
Gautam Gambhir has heaped praise on Virat Kohli for his outstanding performance in India’s World Cup 2023 encounter against New Zealand. In this thrilling match which took place in Dharamsala on October 22, the Kiwis set a target of 274 runs for the Men in Blue. Kohli showcased his cricketing prowess by scoring an impressive 95 runs off 104 balls, which ultimately led the two-time champions to secure a remarkable four-wicket victory with two overs to spare, propelling them to the top of the points table.
During a discussion on Star Sports, Gambhir was asked about Kohli’s role in virtually sealing the game while batting at the No. 3 position. In response, Gambhir expressed his belief that the term “finisher” doesn’t accurately capture Kohli’s prowess
Gambhir said “I have never understood why the finisher’s tag is given only to Nos. 5 to 7. An opener can also be a finisher. A No. 11 can also be a finisher. This has just been created by the media.”
“There was probably no finisher 10 years ago. There can’t be a better finisher than Virat Kohli because of the number of games he has won. So don’t call only the Nos. 5, 6 and 7 as finishers. Whoever scores the last run is a finisher.”
He concurred with the sentiments of former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, suggesting that Virat Kohli should be referred to as the “Master Chaser,” a title akin to Sachin Tendulkar’s “Master Blaster.”
