(Watch) Angelo Mathews becomes the first cricketer to be given ‘timed-out’ in cricket for not coming to bat on time.
In a rather unusual sequence of events, Sri Lanka’s versatile cricketer, Angelo Mathews, found himself heading back to the pavilion during a critical moment in the ICC ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh, which took place on a Monday.
Mathews was called upon to the crease after Bangladesh skipper Shakib al Hasan successfully removed Sadeera Samarawickrama, who had managed to score a commendable 41 runs off 42 balls. However, what transpired next was nothing short of bizarre. The 35-year-old Mathews experienced a delay before making his way onto the field, and the situation was exacerbated by an apparent issue with his helmet.
This peculiar episode unfolded at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi during the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh encounter, marking Angelo Mathews as the first cricketer in history to be declared ‘timed-out’ in the sport. The incident transpired during the 25th over of the match when Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, lodged an appeal for Mathews’ dismissal
It is worth noting that Mathews had indeed entered his crease within the allocated time, but an unforeseen twist occurred when the strap of his helmet unexpectedly broke. This mishap left him unable to face the oncoming delivery, prompting Shakib to proceed with the appeal.
