Joe Root opts out of IPL 2024 ahead of player retentions.

Star England batsman Joe Root has decided to skip the IPL 2024 season, officially conveying his decision to Rajasthan Royals (RR) before the squad retention deadline on Sunday, November 26. Root, who made his IPL debut in the 2023 season after being acquired by RR at the 2023 mini-auction for INR 1 crore, played a limited role in the tournament. The 28-year-old participated in just three matches, with one batting opportunity in which he scored ten runs off 15 balls.

Rajasthan Royals’ Director of Cricket Sangakkara commended Root for making a positive impact on the franchise and his teammates despite the brief duration of his association with the team. The director acknowledged Root’s energy and experience, expressing that their absence will be felt within the squad.

Sangakkara said โ€œDuring our retention conversations, Joe informed us of his decision to not take part in IPL 2024. Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him. His energy around the group and the experience he brought to the Royals will be missed. We respect his decision totally and wish him success in everything he does.”

It’s noteworthy that Root shared the squad with his England white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, during his time with RR. Additionally, he developed a strong rapport with wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, contributing to a positive team dynamic. Root’s decision to opt out of the IPL 2024 season marks a significant development for both the player and the Rajasthan Royals franchise.
