MS Dhoni’s jersey No.7 is retired by BCCI.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retire the No. 7 jersey as a tribute to the legendary former India captain, MS Dhoni. This decision comes in recognition of Dhoni’s remarkable contributions to Indian cricket, particularly leading the team to victory in three ICC titles while donning the No. 7 jersey. The retirement of the No. 7 jersey follows a similar move by the BCCI in retiring the iconic No. 10 jersey worn by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

As per a report from the Indian Express, the BCCI has communicated to the players that the numbers 7 and 10 are no longer available for selection. This move underscores the significance and respect accorded to the memorable contributions made by these cricketing legends.

BCCI official said “The current and the upcoming cricketers have been told about the move. They will not be able to pick MS Dhoni’s number 7 jersey. The BCCI has retired Dhoni’s jersey number, keeping in mind his contributions to the Indian cricket. The No.10 is already unavailable, “Around 60 numbers are designated to the regular Indian players. Even if a player isofff the team for ayearr, his number is not given to anyone else. The debutants have 30 numbers to choose from.” 

MS Dhoni himself had previously shared that the No. 7 jersey held special significance for him, as it corresponds to his birthdate, July 7. The retirement of this jersey serves as a fitting tribute to the captain who played a pivotal role in India’s cricketing success during his illustrious career.
