“Always open to having a beer with anyone” – David Warner gives an open invite to his critics ahead of his farewell Test match.
On January 1, 2024, David Warner made waves by announcing his retirement from ODIs just days before his farewell Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Warner, with an illustrious career in both red and white-ball formats, recently celebrated an ICC World Cup victory with Australia and regained his form in Test cricket
However, a recent controversy involving Mitchell Johnson added a layer of complexity to his farewell. In response to the criticism from former Australia seamer Mitchell Johnson, who questioned Warner’s choice of his farewell series before the Australia-Pakistan series, Warner extended an invitation for anyone with concerns to join him for a drink and engage in conversation post-retirement.
Warner said “There are two types of likes and dislikes. There are ones that hide behind the keyboard and there are ones in real life who have a sit down with you, have a beer and get to know you. They are the real people who support you,I’ve had a few of them, where I’ve called people out and had a beer with them and they’ve changed their opinion. That goes back probably four, five, six years ago.
”But what you see is what you get. I’m very honest, I’m open, always happy to have a beer with anyone who has a disagreement in public. If you don’t like what you see on TV, reach out. That’s open to anyone.”
The exchange between Warner and Johnson stirred controversy due to Johnson’s distasteful remarks, creating a significant buzz around the events leading up to Warner’s retirement.
