Glenn Maxwell’s performance showcased an incredible display of death-over batting against the Netherlands in Delhi. Maxwell achieved his century with one of those eight sixes, reaching the milestone in just 40 balls. This feat set a new record for the fastest hundred at a Men’s Cricket World Cup, surpassing the previous record set by Aiden Markram against Sri Lanka earlier in the same tournament by nine balls. It’s worth noting that Markram’s record-breaking effort also took place in Delhi, breaking a record that had stood since Kevin O’Brien’s 50-ball century against England in 2011.
Maxwell’s remarkable innings concluded in the final over, where he reached an astounding 106 runs from just 44 balls, including nine fours and eight sixes
Maxwell’s extraordinary performance not only set a new record but also stands as the fastest ever by an Australian man in ODI cricket. In the all-time list, his innings ranks as the fourth fastest, with AB de Villiers’ 31-ball century against West Indies in 2015 leading the way.
During his innings, Maxwell accelerated his scoring, bringing up his fifty from 27 balls and reaching three figures in just 13 additional deliveries. Netherlands bowler Bas de Leede had a tough time, conceding 115 runs in his ten overs, marking the most expensive figures in the history of men’s ODI cricket
Most of Maxwell’s brilliant innings were played alongside captain Pat Cummins, resulting in an extraordinary partnership. Together, they added 103 runs from just 44 balls, with Cummins facing only eight deliveries but contributing eight runs. In contrast, Maxwell hammered 91 runs from 36 balls. Thanks to Maxwell’s magnificent effort, Australia managed to reach a total of 399/8, leaving a lasting mark on the match and the record books.
