Glenn McGrath : There’s a bit of pressure on David Warner, maybe it’s coming towards the end of his career.
Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath has expressed his belief that the ongoing Test match at The Oval could potentially be the last one for David Warner in the longest format of the game. The star opener has been struggling with form, particularly in Test matches, since December of the previous year when he scored a double century in his 100th Test match. In the current Ashes 2023 series, Warner has managed to score only 225 runs in nine innings.
Earlier, the 36-year-old cricketer had stated that the upcoming Pakistan series would mark his final Test appearance. However, Warner’s performance on this tour has been marred by difficulties against the moving ball, leading to cheap dismissals, particularly at the hands of English pacer Stuart Broad, who has dismissed him a total of 17 times in his career.
Glenn McGrath to SENQ said “There’s a bit of pressure on Dave Warner. He looked ok (in the first innings at the Oval), but then got out again. To be honest, I think, unfortunately, that maybe it’s coming towards the end of his career.”
McGrath emphasizes that only a significant innings in the second innings of the last Ashes Test could possibly salvage Warner’s red-ball career. Unfortunately, Warner’s numbers in English conditions have not been impressive. Throughout Test matches played in England, the left-handed batsman has never scored a century and has maintained an average of 32.31, which is comparatively lower than his impressive average of over 58 in matches played at home.
“I know he came out the other day and said he wanted to play it to the end of next summer. But I think the pressure is on him, the vultures are circling. Unless he comes out in the second dig and produces a big score, I think he might struggle,” he added later.
