“Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn’t have become tired” – Sehwag disappointed with Gill for not converting his century into a daddy score.
Shubman Gill’s performance in the ODI series against Australia has been exceptionally impressive. The young cricketer came close to achieving a century in the opening match in Mohali and made a powerful comeback at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. On a pitch that favored batsmen and had relatively shorter boundaries, Gill, the dynamic batsman, demonstrated his skill and added his name to the record books by securing his sixth ODI century.
However, not everyone shared the same level of enthusiasm for his century. Virender Sehwag, the former legendary Indian cricketer, expressed his desire to see even more remarkable performances from the talented cricketer from Punjab.
Sehwag, renowned for his aggressive batting style and capacity to play extended innings, was left somewhat unsatisfied. He believed that Gill had the potential to achieve an even higher score and pointed out that young players in their prime can recover quickly and contribute significantly on the field. The former Indian opener stressed the importance of capitalizing on one’s form, as advancing age can present challenges in maintaining such consistently high levels of performance.
Sehwag said “He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now of just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn’t have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn’t have recovered. So, it is better to score big runs now.”
