Australia’s Captain, Pat Cummins, openly admitted the home team’s subpar performance in the second Test against the West Indies at the Gabba in Brisbane. Cummins, also commended Shamar Joseph for his exceptional display of fast bowling.

Going into day four, Australia needed 156 runs with eight wickets remaining. However, Joseph, who had been sidelined the previous day due to a toe injury from Mitchell Starc’s yorker, proved to be the game-changer. The right-arm seamer swiftly dismantled Australia’s batting lineup, starting by breaking the crucial partnership of 71 between Cameron Green and Steve Smith. He concluded Australia’s innings with the wicket of Josh Hazlewood, securing an impressive seven-wicket haul.

During the post-match presentation, Cummins characterized the series as gripping and acknowledged Australia’s fighting chance, particularly after their performance on day three.

Pat Cummins said “[There is] disappointment after a loss [but] that was a fantastic Test match and a fantastic series. In particular, Shamar, the way he bowled today. He was right up for it and unfortunately, we were not good enough. We were confident coming today. Our efforts yesterday were really good, to have a very low total. [A target of] 200-odd was achievable. [West Indies] had different ideas and bowled beautifully and unfortunately [it was] just a bridge too far.”

Joseph’s remarkable feat follows his fifer in the previous Test in Adelaide, where he dismissed Smith with his very first ball in Test cricket. Despite Joseph’s outstanding contributions, the West Indies couldn’t clinch victory as the hosts secured a commanding ten-wicket win.
