“I can’t believe you can actually say that” Usman Khawaja feels crowd has gone over the board with abuses in Ashes 2023.
Usman Khawaja, the prominent Australian batsman, has expressed his concerns about the excessive abuse directed towards players from the crowd during the Ashes 2023 series. Khawaja himself was involved in an unpleasant confrontation with MCC members following the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow on the fifth day of the second Test at Lord’s. The incident occurred as the Australian team was returning to the pavilion for lunch, and a heated argument ensued between Khawaja and a few MCC members.
In response to the incident, three members were suspended due to their unruly behavior. However, Khawaja has further expressed his unease about the language used by English fans towards the players. He emphasized that such behavior is not something he would want his children to be exposed to.
Usman Khawaja to ESPN said โPersonally, if I am coming to the cricket and watching the cricket, I wouldn’t want my kids to be around that. If I saw that I would 100 percent make a complaint or just leave. I think some of the stuff can be pretty poor. Over at Edgbaston, they were calling Travis Head a c… you know what. I’m like I can’t believe you can actually say that in a public domain anywhere.โ
Khawaja also expressed his belief that engaging in hostile crowd behavior, even if it is directed towards the opposing team, is not the right thing to do addressing further said โIf you talk about it to England guys, they say we are equally as rough when (they go to Australia). I don’t agree with it either way. I don’t think it’s the right thing to do,โ
