“I will play the IPL until I can’t walk anymore”, says Glenn Maxwell.
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has declared that the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be the final competition from which he will retire. Maxwell, who was recently retained by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the 2024 IPL mini-auction, continues to exhibit excellent form, indicating that he still possesses several high-quality playing years.
Maxwell’s notable contribution to the Australia squad extended until the third T20I in the five-match series against India, where he achieved a record-equalling fourth T20I century, securing Australia’s lone victory in the series. Prior to this, Maxwell played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumph at the 2023 ODI World Cup, scoring two centuries, including a historic double century during a chase against Afghanistan.
With his focus now shifting to the 2024 T20 World Cup, Maxwell will lead the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season as part of his preparations after the India series. Reflecting on his return to Australia, Maxwell emphasized the significance of the IPL in shaping his cricketing career.
Maxwell said “The IPL will probably be the last tournament I ever play, as I will play the IPL until I can’t walk anymore. I was talking about how good the IPL has been to me throughout my career; the people I’ve met, the coaches I have played under, the international players that you get to rub shoulders with, how beneficial to my whole career that tournament has been.”
“You’re rubbing shoulders with AB [de Villiers] and Virat [Kohli] for two months, talking to them while watching other games. It’s just the greatest learning experience that any player could ask for.”
