The ICC and BCCI unveiled the long-awaited World Cup schedule at an event in Mumbai, just 100 days before the tournament’s commencement. In contrast, the fixtures for the previous World Cups, namely the 2019 edition in England and the 2015 edition in Australia and New Zealand, were released more than 12 months in advance. The 2023 ODI World Cup will span 46 days and comprise 45 league matches, the semi-finals, and the final, all held across venues Dharamsala, Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai.
The tournament format will mirror that of the 2019 World Cup, with ten participating teams playing each other once during the league phase. The top four teams from the league stage will advance to the semi-finals. India qualified for the event as the host nation, while Afghanistan, Australia, England, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa secured their places by finishing in the top eight of the 2020-2023 World Cup Super League. The remaining two teams will be determined through the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers matches in Zimbabwe, featuring Sri Lanka, West Indies, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands, Oman, Scotland, UAE, USA, and Zimbabwe.
The 2023 ODI World Cup kicks off with a highly anticipated match between the finalists of the 2019 edition, New Zealand and England. Meanwhile, the host nation, India, begins their campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai. India’s subsequent matches include facing Afghanistan in Delhi on October 11, Pakistan in Ahmedabad on October 15, Bangladesh in Pune on October 19, New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 22, England in Lucknow on October 29, a qualifier in Mumbai on November 2, South Africa in Kolkata on November 5, and another qualifier in Bengaluru on November 11, which marks the penultimate day of the league stage.
