“If I want to do Sajda, no one can stop me” – Mohammed Shami opens up on his World Cup 2023 celebration controversies.
Star India fast bowler Mohammed Shami had an outstanding performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, emerging as the tournament’s top wicket-taker with an impressive tally of 24 wickets in seven matches. This accomplishment also solidified his position as India’s leading wicket-taker in the history of ODI World Cups, elevating his overall count to 55 scalps.
During the cricketing spectacle, Shami showcased his prowess by securing three five-wicket hauls against New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and a memorable one in the first semi-final against New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. On one occasion, he expressed his jubilation by sitting on his haunches to celebrate the fifer.
It’s noteworthy to address certain claims made by media outlets from Pakistan, suggesting that Shami intended to perform a sacred ‘Sajda’ but withdrew at the last moment due to fear. Responding to these allegations, the Indian seamer clarified that nobody can prevent him from observing Sajda, emphasizing his pride as an Indian Muslim. Shami firmly stated that if he needed permission, he wouldn’t choose to reside in India.
Shami said “If I want to do Sajda then who will stop me? I won’t stop anyone from other religion nor will they stop me. If I want to do it, I will do it. What’s the problem in it? I’m a Muslim, I proudly say that I’m a Muslim and an Indian. So what’s the problem in it? If I had any problem then I wouldn’t be living in India. If I had to take permission to do Sajda from someone then why will I live here.”
