“If South Africa don’t win, I want them to win”: AB de Villiers picks Indian team his 2nd favourite team for World Cup 2023.
Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers recently expressed his support for India in the 2023 World Cup, should the Proteas not secure victory. De Villiers cited several reasons for India’s status as strong favorites in the tournament. He particularly emphasized their abundance of match-winners and the advantage of playing on home soil.
In an interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC), de Villiers shared his sentiments, stating, “They are definitely my second team. If South Africa don’t win, I want them to win. They are just favorites because they’ve got all-round cricketersโa really, really good team. There are a lot of match-winners. They understand the conditions well, and they are playing in front of their home crowd.”
De Villiers further reminisced, drawing parallels to the 2011 World Cup, saying, “It is 2011 all over again. I can see those candles being lit up at the stadium, everyone waving their cellphones.”
India’s performance in the 2023 World Cup has been notably impressive, with the team remaining undefeated thus far. They currently hold the second position in the points table, having secured six victories from as many matches.
