“If Suryakumar Yadav is in your first playing XI, then I would want him to bat at No. 6-7”, says Gautam Gambhir ahead of World Cup 2023.

After a lengthy wait Suryakumar Yadav finally showcased his prowess with a well-deserved ODI half-century in the series opener against Australia in Mohali. This remarkable performance raises the pertinent question of whether it secures him a place in India’s starting XI for the upcoming World Cup.

Renowned cricketer Gautam Gambhir acknowledges the possibility but urges caution for captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid. In a candid conversation with Star Sports on YouTube, the 41-year-old shared his insights. He suggests that if Suryakumar is to be a pivotal player in the World Cup squad, he should ideally occupy the No. 6 or 7 position, primarily as a finisher. However, a significant conundrum emerges when considering who should fill the crucial No. 5 spot.

Gautam Gambhir said “If Suryakumar Yadav is in your first playing XI, then I would want him to bat at 6-7, but the big question will then be who will bat at No. 5. Then Jadeja can bat at No. 5, Hardik at 6 and Suryakumar as finisher where he can bat in the final 15-20 overs.”

He pointed out nevertheless, Suryakumar astutely notes that this strategy isn’t without its risks and complexities. Should such a lineup be adopted, the top four batters would bear a substantial burden of responsibility, potentially heightening the pressure on their shoulders.

Moreover he added “But it will be a huge gamble deciding whether you want Jadeja at No. 5 and Suryakumar, in the form that he is in ODI cricket, at No. 7. This would put a lot of responsibility on the top four.”
