‘It is always an advantage to play against the good teams first’, Sunil Gavaskar on India’s 1st match against Australia in World Cup 2023.

Team India is set to begin their campaign in the highly anticipated 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup against Australia on October 8. The match will take place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The tournament itself will commence on October 5 with a clash between England and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Speaking about India’s opening match, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar emphasized the significance of facing a formidable opponent like Australia in a knockout match. He acknowledged that such a challenge could prove to be difficult for the Indian team. Gavaskar, who is now a renowned cricket commentator, expressed his belief that it is advantageous for the home team to confront a strong team like Australia in the marquee event. He further stated that if India’s performance in the first game is not up to par, they would have more opportunities to rectify their mistakes and make a comeback in the tournament. On the other hand, if India were to face a weaker opposition, Gavaskar suggested that the team would be cautious in their approach, carefully analyzing their strategies to ensure success.

Sunil Gavaskar said “Absolutely. It would have been even more difficult if you were to play Australia in a must-win last match. I feel it is always an advantage to play against the good teams first,”.

He further added”If you don’t get a good result, you have chances later. If you probably play against some weak team later, you will know what you need to do against them and with what margin you need to win,”
