“It won’t involve a group discussion” : Coach Brendon McCullum on countering Jasprit Bumrah after his stunning spell in 2nd Test
Jasprit Bumrah showcased an exceptional display of reverse swing bowling during the second Test in Visakhapatnam, playing a pivotal role in India’s 106-run victory over England. Bumrah’s stellar performance saw him claim nine crucial wickets, leaving a significant impact on the outcome of the match.
In the first innings, Bumrah wreaked havoc with a six-wicket haul, dismissing key English batsmen like Joe Root and Ben Stokes. Despite the supposedly flat pitch, Bumrah ended the innings with impressive figures of 6/45, putting England on the back foot.
Continuing his dominance in the second innings, Bumrah added three more wickets to his tally, finishing the match with nine wickets for just 91 runs. His ability to extract reverse swing proved instrumental in preventing England from gaining a strong foothold in the game, a fact acknowledged by cricket experts.
Although Bumrah’s performance drew praise from many quarters, England’s coach, Brendon McCullum, downplayed the necessity for a collective discussion to counter the Indian pacer. Speaking to BBC Sport, McCullum commended Bumrah’s spell but expressed confidence in his players’ ability to devise a strategy to tackle him.
McCullum (to BBC) said “Bumrah showcased an impressive display of reverse swing. Our team possesses ample talent and quality. It’s about ensuring they feel confident to make decisions and fully commit to their strategies. We must find ways to counter that, however, it won’t involve a group discussion.”
McCullum emphasized the intensity of the India vs England series, likening it to a ‘heavyweight fight’ with contrasting styles and strong convictions from both teams. With the series currently tied at 1-1, he anticipates an exciting continuation based on the competitive performances witnessed in the first two matches.
“A great fight arises from a difference in styles and conviction in those methods. Both teams, as observed, are equally matched in giving their best. Supporters worldwide have undoubtedly found immense entertainment and thrill in the series. The 1-1 scoreline accurately mirrors the current situation. If the upcoming three Tests maintain the same intensity as the last two, we’re in for an incredibly exciting series,” added the England Test coach.
