“Lost One Of My Mates…”:Nathan Lyon Bashes Kevin Pietersen Over Concussion Substitute Remarks.
Nathan Lyon amazed the cricketing world when he bravely stepped onto the field on Day 4 of the second Ashes Test at the renowned Lord’s Cricket Ground, despite suffering from a calf injury that made it difficult for him to walk. Despite the risk of aggravating his condition and potentially being ruled out of the ongoing series, the seasoned spin maestro showcased his determination and refused to let his injury keep him away from the game, disregarding the advice of medical professionals.
As Lyon made his way towards the stumps, the entire stadium rose to their feet, giving him a resounding standing ovation. However, former England international Kevin Pietersen offered a different perspective and proceeded to criticize the Australian cricketer. Pietersen, insinuated that Lyon might have intentionally sought a head injury to enable the Australian team to benefit from a concussion substitute in the fourth innings.
Lyon, understandably, took offense to Pietersen’s comment. At the end of the day’s play, the 35-year-old spinner responded by revealing the personal significance of the issue. He recounted the tragic loss of his close friend Phillip Hughes, who passed away as a result of a head injury. Lyon emphasized that he would never want to witness a similar incident and clarified that he had no intention of putting himself in harm’s way. The veteran spinner expressed his pride in his efforts and stated that he would willingly repeat them if the situation called for it.
Nathan Lyon said “I have heard comments that I only went out there to get hit in the head but I’m really against that. I have lost one of my mates due to being hit in the head so I think that’s a really poor conversation being had, if I’m honest with you,”
He added “I knew the risks but the way I look at it… I’ll do anything for this team. You never know how big a 15-run partnership can be in an Ashes series. I’m proud of myself for going out there and doing that. I’ll do it again and again and again. I love this team. I love playing cricket for Australia. And if I can keep playing my role and help out my teammates I’ll do that,”.
