Mohammed Shami ruled out of two Tests against England, Suryakumar Yadav will also go under surgery.
In a setback for the Indian cricket team, Mohammed Shami is set to miss the initial two Test matches against England, commencing on January 25, owing to an ongoing ankle injury. Shami’s absence stems from his yet-to-commence bowling sessions, and he is required to undergo a fitness assessment at the National Cricket Academy.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav is slated for hernia surgery, sidelining him for an extended period. The surgery is anticipated to take eight to nine weeks for a complete recovery, ensuring his availability for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.
A source within the Indian board revealed, “Shami hasn’t initiated bowling, and his participation in the first two Tests against England seems improbable.” The decision to prioritize Shami’s recovery is influenced by the depth in India’s pace department, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj ready to shoulder the responsibility, particularly in the home conditions of the five-match series.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is diligently assessing Yadav’s hernia condition and is contemplating overseas consultation for his surgery. Despite his prolonged absence from the national side, Yadav is expected to make a swift recovery and feature for the Mumbai Indians in the upcoming IPL season.
