“My biggest learning curve” – Faf du Plessis on playing under MS Dhoni for Chennai Super Kings.

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis recently shared insights into the valuable lessons he gained during his tenure with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Spanning 11 seasons from 2011 to 2021, du Plessis contributed significantly with memorable innings for his team.

Reflecting on the successful period that saw him being part of two IPL triumphs, du Plessis expressed appreciation for his time in the CSK dressing room. He highlighted the enriching experience of being a young player under the leadership of Captain MS Dhoni and Head Coach Stephen Fleming, emphasizing the considerable learning opportunities they provided.

Faf said “Firstly, it was great to be part of that dressing room as a young guy. Probably my biggest learning curve was being fortunate enough to be there under Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni really at the start of my initial journey. Just to see the big guns do things, it was great to learn from them. During my first season, I was just sitting and asking questions and observing them.”

Du Plessis commended Dhoni’s composed demeanor, particularly in high-pressure situations, and acknowledged the positive impact the captain has on the team’s bowling attack, saying “MS is Captain Cool, as they call him. He is always very calm under pressure. So it’s always important that under pressure or when the stakes are a bit more higher, you remain relaxed and it makes a big difference to the bowling attack, especially. Very lucky to have played under him.”
