“My body tells me I’m 40, my ID says I’m 31” , Quinton de Kock gets emotional on playing last ODI in South Africa.
Quinton de Kock, the South African wicketkeeper, recently delivered an emotional speech ahead of his final home ODI against Australia. The cricketer revealed his retirement plans from the 50-over format following the 2023 World Cup in India. This pivotal match marked the Proteas’ last home ODI before the impending mega event.
Addressing the audience at The Wanderers Stadium, Quinton de Kock openly shared his sentiments. Despite being 31 years old, he acknowledged that his body feels more like that of a 40-year-old. In a bid to maintain a youthful mindset, he emphasized his continuous mental effort to stay as agile and spirited as a 20-year-old.
De Kock further disclosed that he had heartfelt discussions with his close friends and family members before making the significant announcement about his retirement.
De Kock said “It was just the feeling I was getting. In the end of my Test career, I was fighting to play. 50 Tests was a lot and could take a toll on you. I gave a thought and chatted with people I trust. They said there’s no shame in retiring and focusing on other formats.”
“Lots of memories in the 10-11 years. My body tells me I’m 40, my ID says I’m 31, I still mentally try to act like I am 20 all the time,” he added.
