New Zealand rattles England by 9 wickets in the1st match of World Cup 2023, Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway smashed tons.
In the opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, New Zealand’s stand-in captain, Tom Latham, won the toss and elected to bowl. England faced a series of setbacks throughout their innings, with Joe Root playing a crucial role in anchoring the team. Root’s partnership with captain Jos Buttler, which yielded 70 runs off 72 balls, proved to be England’s most substantial contribution. Despite having a deep batting lineup, England struggled and lost six wickets before the 40th over. Their situation became even more precarious when Root was dismissed for 77 off 86 balls. The final 10 overs of the innings were a tough grind for England, and they managed to post a total of 282/9 in their allotted 50 overs.
New Zealand encountered an early setback in their innings but found their rhythm as Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway began to find the boundaries. Conway displayed an exceptional performance, reaching his century in just 83 deliveries, while Ravindra also showcased his prowess by scoring a century of his own. Kane Williamson, as expected, missed the ODI World Cup opener for New Zealand, and England was without the services of Ben Stokes.
Opener Conway was the star of the show, amassing an impressive 152* off 121 balls, while young talent Ravindra played a stroke-filled innings, scoring 123* off 96 deliveries. This remarkable partnership propelled New Zealand to a resounding 9-wicket victory over the defending champions at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Among the bowlers, Matt Henry stood out for New Zealand, securing three wickets while conceding 48 runs in his 10 overs. However, it was Rachin Ravindra who was awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding century against the defending champions.
