“No chance of stealing that” – Shreyas Iyer on playing at Virat Kohli’s No.3 spot for India’s in ODI.
Shreyas Iyer, a prominent batter for Team India, has emphatically declared that Virat Kohli’s No.3 position in the one-day side is irreplaceable. This proclamation followed Iyer’s exceptional performance in the second ODI against Australia, where he secured victory for India while batting in Kohli’s customary position.
In the absence of Kohli and regular captain Rohit Sharma during the first two ODIs against Australia, India took the opportunity to assess the depth of their squad. It’s worth noting that Virat Kohli has an illustrious track record at No.3 in ODIs, boasting an impressive average of 60.25 in 213 innings, amassing 10,906 runs and achieving 40 centuries.
After being honored with the Player of the Match award during the post-match presentation, Shreyas Iyer expressed his relief at seeing his hard work yield positive results. He emphasized his commitment to keeping things straightforward and effective in his approach to the game.
Shreyas Iyer said “It was a rollercoaster ride, feeling fantastic,” he said. “My team-mates, friends and family were there for my support. I was seeing the matches on TV, I wanted to be out there and participate in the matches. Grateful to be believing in myself. Basically when I went in to bat, I didn’t want to complicate things. I wanted to get my eyes set, that’s how I give confidence to myself.”
“I am flexible, ready to bat any position, whatever my team needs me to do. Virat (Kohli) is one of the greats, there’s no chance of stealing that (number 3) spot from him,” said Iyer.
