‘Rayudu should have played the 2019 World Cup’, Says Anil Kumble.
Ambati Rayudu bid farewell to his illustrious professional career in Indian cricket on a triumphant note. His significant contribution in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) helped the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secure their fifth IPL title. Rayudu played a splendid cameo, scoring 19 runs off just 8 balls against the Gujarat Titans. With CSK’s victory, Rayudu added another IPL title to his collection, making it his sixth overall. Prior to this win, he had won three titles with the Mumbai Indians in 2013, 2015, and 2017, and three with CSK in 2018, 2021, and 2023.
Anil Kumble, the former head coach of the Indian cricket team, expressed his opinion on Rayudu’s retirement and highlighted the controversial omission of the talented batsman from the Indian squad for the 2019 ODI World Cup.
“Rayudu should have played the 2019 World Cup. Oh yes, there’s no doubt about it. It was a huge blunder. You prepared him for that role for so long and his name just disappears from the squad. It was surprising nonetheless,”
