“Rohit Sharma didn’t want the captaincy because there was a lot of pressure on playing all formats”: Sourav Ganguly.
Every budding cricketer aspires to one day captain their national team. Leading a cricket-enthusiastic nation like India comes with its challenges, making it a coveted role that many players dream of experiencing.
Following Virat Kohli’s captaincy tenure, Rohit Sharma assumed the leadership role. However, Sourav Ganguly, who served as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during that period, revealed in a recent interview that the Mumbai batsman wasn’t initially eager to take on the captaincy responsibilities. Ganguly explained that Rohit Sharma was heavily engaged in playing a substantial amount of cricket and had a considerable workload, influencing his initial reluctance to embrace the captain’s role.
Ganguly revealed “Rohit [Sharma] didn’t want the captaincy because there was a lot of pressure on playing all formats – it had gone to a stage where I told him you have to say yes or I will announce your name. I am happy he has taken it now he is leading from the front and you guys can check the results.”
