“Sanju Samson has that kind of ability”, Mohammad Kaif feels Samson is ready for World Cup 2023.
Team India’s decision to experiment during their ODI series against the West Indies by resting Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the last two games proved beneficial for wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. After a lackluster performance in the second ODI, Samson rose to the occasion in the series-deciding third ODI in Trinidad on Tuesday, August 1, scoring a quickfire half-century.
Despite facing immense pressure to perform, Samson displayed composure, scoring a brilliant 51 runs off 41 balls. His impressive innings played a significant role in India’s massive total of 351 runs in the first innings, eventually leading to a comprehensive victory as the West Indies were bowled out for 151 runs.
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif was full of praise for Sanju Samson, especially impressed with the way he handled spin bowling. Kaif noted that the Rajasthan Royals captain’s proficiency against spinners and his overall performance in the series indicate his readiness for the upcoming World Cup.
Kaif said “I am very, very impressed with Sanju Samson. The way he played the last game was impactful and he has done that in the past as well whether at four or five. Sending Ishan (Kishan) or probably Axar (Patel) at number four isn’t really a good idea. You need a batter (at number 4 or 5) who can play left-arm spin as well as leg spin and Sanju Samson has that kind of ability.”
“If you look at the last game (vs WI), he knew it was a do-or-die game and had the understanding, if he didn’t perform well, he won’t be included in the World Cup squad. Samson’s knock in the third ODI came under pressure and he is ready for the World Cup.”
