“Stop playing Ranji Trophy” Sunil Gavaskar gets angry over selectors for not selecting Sarfaraz Khan for West Indies Tour.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his disappointment with the selectors’ decision to overlook Sarfaraz Khan for the upcoming Test series in the West Indies. Gavaskar criticized the current selection process, arguing that it is heavily influenced by players’ performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) rather than their domestic performances in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy.
Gavaskar, who is now a renowned cricket commentator, believes that if the selectors continue to solely rely on IPL performances, there is no point in continuing with the Ranji Trophy tournament. He emphasized the need to give deserving players like Sarfaraz a chance to prove themselves on the international stage.
Sarfaraz Khan, has been in exceptional form in recent domestic seasons. In the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy, he amassed an impressive 556 runs in just six matches at an outstanding average of 92.66, including three centuries. The previous season, 2021–22, saw Sarfaraz score a remarkable 982 runs at an average of 122.75, with four centuries to his name.
Sunil Gavaskar said “Sarfaraz Khan has been scoring at an average of 100 in all past three seasons. What does he have to do to be picked in the squad? He might not be in the XI, but you pick him in the team. Tell him that his performances are being recognized. Otherwise, stop playing Ranji Trophy. Say, it’s of no use, you just play IPL and think you are good enough for the red ball game as well.”.”
