Sunrisers Eastern Cape wins the SA20 2024, becomes back to back Champions.
The SA20 2024 summit clash unfolded at the Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday, February 10, featuring a showdown between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durbanโs Super Giants. Both teams had encountered various challenges on their path to the final, and as the highly anticipated match commenced, they were determined to showcase their best performances.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that proved fruitful. The team started strongly with opener Jordan Hermann scoring 42 runs off 26 balls. Despite Dawid Malan’s early departure, dismissed by Reece Topley for six runs, the top order displayed remarkable resilience. Tom Abell contributed 55 runs, skipper Aiden Markram remained unbeaten with 42 runs off 26 deliveries, and Tristan Stubbs added 56 runs, enabling Sunrisers to amass a formidable total of 204 runs for the loss of just three wickets.
In response, Durbanโs Super Giants faced a daunting target of 205 runs. However, their batting lineup faltered early on as openers Quinton de Kock and Matthew Breetzke were swiftly dismissed for 3 and 18 runs, respectively. The team continued to struggle with JJ Smuts and Bhanuka Rajapaksa also departing cheaply.
Although Wiaan Mulder provided some stability in the middle order with 38 runs off 22 balls, Sunrisersโ bowling attack proved too formidable for Durban. Marco Jansen starred with the ball, claiming five wickets, while Ottniel Baartman and Daniel Worrall secured two wickets each, and Simon Harmer chipped in with one. Durbanโs Super Giants were eventually bowled out for just 115 runs, handing Sunrisers Eastern Cape a convincing 89-run victory and yet another SA20 title.
