“That’s why he had lost his place”: Dinesh Karthik on failure of Ajinkya Rahane in West Indies Test Series.
India emerged victorious in the Test series against West Indies with a 1-0 win after the conclusion of the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad. Despite the fifth day of the second Test being washed out, India showcased an impressive performance throughout the series.
Key players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal demonstrated remarkable form, contributing significantly with their batting performances. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj stood out with their exceptional bowling skills, bagging crucial wickets for the team.
On the flip side, two prominent Indian players, Shubman Gill and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, had a rather underwhelming series. Both players struggled to find their form, managing to score only 45 runs and 11 runs, respectively, across the two Tests. This dip in performance raised concerns about their contributions to the team’s success.
Dinesh Karthik, the experienced wicketkeeper-batter of the Indian team, commented on Ajinkya Rahane’s lackluster performance, pointing out that inconsistency has been an issue throughout Rahane’s career. This inconsistency ultimately led to Rahane losing his place in the team in 2022.
Dinesh Karthik on Cricbuzz said
โRahane obviously had a very ordinary series. He had really got the WTC final, hence was picked and also named as vice-captain for this series – a few surprises there. He got two opportunities with the bat and on both occasions he was found wanting. The thing with Rahane over a period of time has been that critical word: consistency. That’s why he had lost his place in the side. He would know, he did not make the series count.”
