“There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs” – Glenn Maxwell on playing Tests at home after a terrific white ball performance in India.

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has openly acknowledged that his aspirations of participating in a Test match on home soil are diminishing. Expressing the scarcity of available positions, he remains optimistic about contributing to red-ball cricket for Australia in subcontinental conditions.

Maxwell, aged 35, has featured in only seven Test matches throughout his international career, with the last one dating back to 2017. Notably, all of his Test appearances have occurred in subcontinental venues. Despite his absence from the red-ball format for the Australian team in recent years, speculations about a potential recall surfaced following his noteworthy performances in the ODI World Cup in India.

However, Maxwell did not find a place in the Australian Test squad for the initial match against Pakistan scheduled to take place in Perth from December 14 to 18. During an interview with SEN Radio, the versatile player shared his perspective on his prospects of returning to Test cricket.

Maxwell said “Obviously, I would have loved to have played a Test at home. I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions, I don’t think there’s another subcontinent tour until early 2025. So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage. But yeah, it would have been nice to play one at home, it’s where I played all my First-Class cricket and it felt like I toiled away for a few years there.”

Maxwell added “It’s something that I wish I would have been able to do. But circumstances and timing I probably was more preferred in the white-ball area.”
