“These were the people I was seeing on TV at one time”, Mukesh Kumar on getting hugged by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after getting his 1st Wicket.
Indian pacer Mukesh Kumar has expressed his joy and excitement after making his international debut in the ongoing second Test against the West Indies in Trinidad. The talented bowler was brought into the playing XI, replacing Shardul Thakur, and he made an impressive impact by returning figures of 16-6-48-2 in the first innings.
Mukesh Kumar’s journey to his international debut was filled with perseverance and consistent performances in domestic cricket as well as for India A. Despite waiting on the sidelines for a considerable period, he continued to showcase his skills, catching the attention of selectors. His call-up to the red-ball squad came at a time when leading pacers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami were rested.
The right-arm pacer made a memorable start to his international career by claiming his maiden wicket in the 52nd over, dismissing fellow debutant Kirk McKenzie.
Mukesh Kumar said “When you (Siraj) and Jaydev were bowling with the new ball, I could not wait for my turn. Rohit bhai had told me that this is not a pitch where you will get wickets straight away, so there will be some hard work and patience required.”
Reflecting on the experience, Mukesh shared his feelings of elation and pride at being embraced by senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after achieving this milestone in international cricket, saying “When I got my wicket, Rohit and Virat came over and gave me a hug,” he continued. “It was a strange feeling in a good way as these were the people I was seeing on TV at one time and I cannot really describe it.”
