“This experience is going to make him better” Abhishek Nayar backs Shubman Gill for World Cup 2023.

Shubman Gill

Former India cricketer Abhishek Nayar has expressed his support for Shubman Gill despite the recent challenges he faced during the West Indies tour. Nayar, 39, believes that the demanding conditions in the Windies will ultimately contribute to Gill’s growth and improvement as a player.

Although Gill’s recent scores in the limited-overs series were not ideal with 7, 34, 85 (three ODIs), and 3 (first T20I), his overall performance in ODIs since 2022 has been remarkable. In 24 matches, he scored 1388 runs at an impressive average of 57.88, including four centuries and six half-centuries. Nayar conveyed his thoughts to PTI on the matter.

Nayar said “I am not worried about Shubman, as he has got a strong base and culture. It’s tough for a young cricketer to play so much cricket and be that consistent. You need to cut him some slack and say that he’s going to fail.”

He more added โ€œHe’s playing in the West Indies, not the easiest of conditions for battingโ€ฆ low-scoring games. This experience is going to make him better. I think he’s going to have a terrific World Cup.โ€
